The Delphic Maxims

WHAT THE DELPHIC MAXIMS ARE?

The Delphic Maxims are many commandments that include much of the wisdom and the teachings of ancient Greeks in just some sentences, written at the area of the Delphic Oracle. Located at Delphi, close to Mount Parnassus - home of Pegasus - , the Oracle was built at the place where it was considered as the Navel of Earth, the center of the world.

''Once upon a time, Zeus ordered two eagles to fly across the world and meet at its center. After days of flying, the two eagles meet each other at the Delphi, a place that was home of Python, an earth-dragon who was guarding the Omphalos, the Navel of Earth, killing anyone who would approach the area.
Apollo, killed the dragon, took the Omphalos, and created the Oracle, an Oracle that quickly became the most famous Oracle of antiquity, playing a main role in ancient Greek history, holding important athletic and musical events, advising any traveler for his future and creating better people with its wisdom. A common secret between ancient Greeks was the priests of the Oracle were having secret knowledge of forbidden subjects and the ability of creating hyper technological devices and the area quickly gained publicity because of the extreme magnetic energy and gases that was releasing and various ''UFO'' sightings.''

THE OMPHALOS (Delphi Archaeology Museum

At the entrance of the Oracle, any visitor could read the Delphic Maxims. Although many commandments are considered to be part of the Delphic Maxims list (and more were added at the later years), three of them are the basic ones, and were written at a special place, where anyone would read them first before having any visual contact with the rest.

It must be noticed that there isn't any official translation of the Maxims from ancient Greek to any other language and all the available translations are from individuals with this causing, sometimes, the misleading translation and any personal explanation of the Maxims cant be considered as the original explanations the priests of the Delphic Oracle would give. Also, some words had a different meaning from the one people use in modern times.

The three basic commandments are :

1) ΓΝΩΘΙ Σ'ΑΥΤΟΝ - KNOW THYSELF

2) ΜΗΔΕΝ ΑΓΑΝ - NOTHING IN EXCESS

3) ΕΓΓΥΑ ΠΑΡΑ Δ'ΑΤΗ - this phrase cant be translated correctly in other languages because no one actually knows why this phrase has been told and anyone can make various thoughts why and translate it as he wants. A translation that maybe is close to the original meaning is BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU PROMISE(/WISH)

those three where located next to the letter E ( Έψιλον ) and under the most important phrase :

ΕΝ ΔΕΛΦΟΙΣ Ε - THE E OF DELPHI
Plutarch, a Greek historian and a priest of the Oracle, tried to explain the meaning of this phrase at one of his works, without giving many and clear details according to the first readers of the book. This happened probably because of the following reasons :
A) Priests didn't have the permission to reveal the secret knowledge they had to public.
B) His work was changed later by other writers, having as mission to hide the secret knowledge that was revealed by Plutarch.

The meaning of the Delphic E symbol is still unknown to us but various conjectures exist. From ancient times, many tried to explain what it really symbolizes by using the science of arithmosophy. It is considered one of the most ancient symbol of the Greek culture, with the rest being the Greek Cross and various versions of it, the Meander and various versions of it and the Λ completing the list of the most ancient Greek symbols. At later years hundred of other symbols were used by Greeks for many reasons, symbols that nowadays are used by many cultures, religions, organizations etc.

THE DELPHIC EPSILON
''E''

(The Greek Cross - a cross that all its arms are of equal length - can be easily noticed in the middle of the Delphic E, a symbol that later changed the history of humanity with the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ and a symbol that is now used on the Greek flag

TWO VERSIONS OF MEANDER - THE GREEK KEY

(Different versions of the Meander are the Gammadion and the Tetraskelion among others, included the swastika, a symbol that became famous because of its use from the Nazi German Party,1920)

THE Λ

(The Greek letter Λ Lamda, often appeared on the Spartan warriors' shields and elsewhere and it can be explained as a symbol of showing the Holy Trinity, the most important belief of Christian Greek Orthodoxes, where at the top of the Symbol is the Father, and below is the Holy Spirit and the Son, all three connecting to each other through the Father and being One.
{ Christian Orthodox teaching - the Apostles' original teaching, in contrast with the Catholic belief that Holy Spirit can also proceed from the Son, ''filioque'' }

Quick Info : the first letters of the Greek words for Greece (ΕΛΛΑΣ) and Greek (ΕΛΛΗΝ) start with the very important letters for ancient Greeks: E and Λ

These symbols(especially the Meanders) can be found in many ancient cultures around the world on temples of the native civilizations.
They were used on temples for showing or warning for something that was located there and as a compass for the ancient travelers that wished to explore the land, complete a mission of military, geological, geographical or social interest or just communicate with the native people, exchanging knowledge, cultural traditions, gifts and products.
Some examples of Greek travelers who were searching for those symbols at their long trips are Alexander the Great in Asia and Africa, Hercules in Europe and North America, Odysseus in Central and South America and others.

ORACLES' SECRET PROPHECIES

Many ancient heroes, kings, politicians, generals, athletes, writers, travelers or just simple citizens visited the Oracles to ask a question and get an advice. Some of the questions and the answers are known to us by ancient historians and writers. That which are not known to many but only to few are the secret prophecies of various Oracles by the Sibyls. Sibyls were priestesses of the Apollonian Oracles located everywhere in the ancient world and they were responsible from answering, advising and giving prophecies about future. People were believing that some of the Sibyls, although they were mortal, could live for some hundreds of years without getting (too) old. Three of the Sibyls became very famous at the ancient times because of their prophecies and those were the Delphic Sibyl, the Samian Sibyl and the Cumaean Sibyl.

THE CUMAEAN SIBYL

The Cumaean Sibyl was the priestess of Cumaean Apollonian Oracle in Cumae, an ancient Greek colony located near to today's city of Naples, Italy. Her real name is not known but her prophecies are. She wrote nine books full of prophecies and tried to sell them to the king Tarquin. The king, thinking that the price is too high refused, so the Sybil burned three of them and asked him again to buy the remaining books at a lower price. The king refused again so the Sybil burned three more, offering her last three books to the king. Tarquin, admiring the fact that the Sibyl didn't give up, bought the last three books at the price of the nine books. The king ordered his soldiers to keep the books at a safe place that only very few people knew its location. Some parts of the books can be found nowadays at big libraries. The most important prophecy written at those books is the prophecy about the birth of Jesus Christ as the Savor of the world and the Christian Heaven. Some of the other prophecies that can be found at her books are about the Trojan War, Homer, Spartans' great army and Alexander's the Great conquests.

THE SAMIAN SIBYL

The Samian Sibyl was the priestess of the Samos Apollonian Oracle, located in Samos island, Greece. Writers called her with at least three different names and there is some kind of confusion if those names are for the same Sybil or for different Sybils. She was living probably in the cage that used to be Pythagoras' home. The cave hosts the very old Holy Monastery of Virgin Mary(/Panagia) Spiliani. She is famous for her prophecy about the birth of Jesus Christ, with adding a new detail that the birth will be in a stable.

THE DELPHIC SIBYL

The Delphic Sibyl was the priestess of the Delphic Apollonian Oracle, located in Delphi, Greece. She is the most famous Sibyl, since she was the priestess of the most famous Oracle. She gave hundreds of advices and prophecies with the last one being the most important. The last prophecy of the Sibyl, which was the last prophecy the Delphic Oracle ever gave before its been closed was about the birth of Jesus Christ, by calling him the Only and Real God, the One that ''I'' believe in and all people must believe in for saving their souls. Also at this prophecy* can someone read that God's name will have 4 vowels and 2 consonants, Greek word for Jesus is ΙΗΣΟΥΣ , 4 vowels ( I,H,O,Y ) and 2 consonants (Σ,Σ) and that He will suffer on a Cross. The legend says that this prophecy wasn't given by the Sibyl but from Apollo himself when a traveler asked ''Who is the God?''.

* Some believe the prophecy's part about the letter belongs to the Cumaean Sibyl's prophecy and not to the Delphic Sibyl's one

There are many more prophecies of the Sibyls by giving many details about Jesus Christ, agreeing with the theological thoughts of the majority of ancient Greek philosophers and writers about the One God who is the Maker of everything.
Detailed post about Sibyls' and Greek philosophers' predictions and thoughts about monotheism soon

It must be noticed here that for the Sibyls, all cultures had some wise people who were talking about the One God, with many of them also giving some kind of prophecies with details. Some of the cultures that have examples of monotheistic prophecies, apart from the Greek one are the Egyptian, the Roman, the Hebrew, the Chinese, the Celtic, the native American, the Persian, the Arabic and the Indian culture.

WHAT IS THE IMPORTANCE OF THE DELPHIC MAXIMS?

Although there are many left to be discovered and to be revealed about the Delphic Maxims, the Delphic Oracle's and all the Apollonian Oracles' role in general, we can still use the Maxims for making our lives better. The Maxims are what schools should teach to children and teens replacing the useless random information they give and make them great people and the Maxims are what TV should show at educational shows and improve adults. Imagine how better our world would be if we were following even just some of those commandments in our lives.
